Magic Vs Technology Empty Magic Vs Technology

Post by Simply David Thu 21 Aug 2014, 2:21 am

The world is in a chaotic state, and people have been tense. There's a war going on that's taking the lives of soldiers from all over the world. This war is between those two sides:

Those who believe in magic, believing that the growth of technology is causing the planet to decay, forcing back nature's growth, and overall causing people to become more vile. Almost every non-human race predominantly prefers this side, but there are many who have changed sides.

Those who believe in technology, thinking that it is not only the way of the future, but humanity's salvation. Through technological growth, people can live happier and more free than ever before. This is predominantly humans, but the Dwarves in particular have undergone a political civil dispute. Mostly because the Dwarves are partly responsible for most of the tech.

This war's beginning is unclear and few are certain how it started, though the first large scale battle was merely a decade ago. It was a battle that tore apart an entire country, leaving a gaping hole in the earth that is surrounded by wasteland where nothing grows.

Both sides try to avoid repeating such large scale catastrophic combat, which has resulted in an almost 'cold war' state where there's only smaller skirmishes. There's still large battles where higher up soldiers commanding mighty machines go into battle against the world's most powerful magic users, but these fights frequently result in stalemates with fatalities on both sides.

------
(World Description)

Around the world there are cities in most countries where modern society has taken over. There are cars, paved roads, airports where people can take a flight between cities, and buildings that practically touch the sky with how tall they are. These cities are situated in places that are perfect for business, and are also generally safe. A few are in more dangerous locations, being close to where wild monsters run loose, or some other magic-related threat, but in such cases the city is walled in on one or more sides, and there's more prominent patrols around.

Outside of major cities, most of the world remains unchanged. This is due to how rapidly technology had grown over the course of a century, along with the discovery of new lands through advanced transportation. Such a large amount of land remains untouched by those who have turned their backs on magic. There are even entire countries unaffected, mostly those controlled by non-human races or those who have fought off the advances of explorers. Anywhere lacking the modern feel of cities is still very full of mana, and many still use various magics based on how they were raised. These are also the areas most dangerous to walk around in if you are unprepared, as many large creatures still roam the wilds looking for prey.

Furthermore, an odd mutation has sprung up over time as well. Children born with ESPer abilities, strange oddly specific powers that they are rather good at, but they are also born without mana. Due to this, they'd be incapable of using magic no matter how hard they tried, regardless of who their parentage is. This has resulted in bad names from those who believe in Magic as being the most noble power in the world. The kindest of these is "The Manaless", and they are prejudiced against in many cultures. Many don't even manage to make friends because of this, but luckily ESP isn't very common outside of cities.

------

Alright guys! This basic setting should work as an excellent base for any type of world building you feel like doing! If you want to do something specific with elves, go for it! If there's a Dwarf with his personally-crafted super mecha, please by all means go for it! If you want to take a tribal human who has never seen a tv before, and throw them into a city, have fun!

Some basic character creation rules because I want to nitpick just a bit:

  • People who use both technology and magic are the extreme exception, so please don't make too many characters like this. A big part of this RP is the conflict between them, so someone accepting both is one thing but using both is kind of an issue.
  • Despite how I may have worded the races, you can actually take whatever fantasy race you want and put them in this world, on either side of magic or technology, or just a character who has simply swapped sides.
  • You may make as many characters with the so called "Super Mechas" as you wish, I'm not too worried about this even though they're supposed to be semi-rare.
  • Someone needs to give me a name for the mechs in this world because I'm not good at naming things. This isn't really a character creation rule, though, I guess.
  • Ask me if you're unsure about how powerful your magic can or cannot be. There's some minor rules I want to put in place but overall the really high powered magic should be fine if your character is expected to fight a mecha.
  • Remember that being born with ESP means you can't use mana at all. You'll have to pick between magic or ESP if you want one, and they both have their own advantages. Technically, ESPers can be on the side of magic but MANY magic users will not trust you on principle.

Magic Vs Technology Empty Re: Magic Vs Technology

Post by GenericSpider Thu 21 Aug 2014, 9:42 am

Name: Cassie Troy

Age: 20

Gender: female

Race: human

Appearance:

Magic-vs-Tech: tech

ESP: Can sense any negative emotions directed at her; as well as killing intent. This ability has proven useful in combat; though it also seems to have unfortunate psychological side effects.

Equipment: As with most pilots; her equipment consists of some light rations, a knife; and a pistol.

Vehicles/Mounts: Has piloted several types of mechs; mostly ones with flight capability. Is also considered a potential super robot candidate; though she has not yet been assigned a super robot due to her mental state.

Personality: Living with her powers has driven her kind of nuts. Is almost always on edge; and never really trusts anyone. Always assumes the worst of every person she meets.

Bio: Though her family was once known for producing powerful psychics; she's the first person born in generations with any hint of ESP. Her powers developed around the time she was 12; and the moment they manifested her family began to put loads of pressure on her. At first, she tried to live up to their expectations. However, she eventually grew fed up with them; and ran away to join the military.

Magic Vs Technology Empty Re: Magic Vs Technology

Post by ScorpionWins Sat 23 Aug 2014, 5:42 pm

Name: Voltruteleock (Usually just goes by “Volt”)

Age: 204

Gender: Physically genderless, refers to himself as Male

Race: Elemental

Appearance:
"I ain't a nice lookin' guy, that's for sure. But, well, y'know what they say about books n' covers. ":

Magic-vs-Tech: Magic

Magic abilities/ESP: As an elemental, Volt can control electricity, shooting lightning bolts, making electric barriers, and zapping anyone he touches, with his body or his dagger (ranging from a joy buzzer effect to full on electrical burns), though he's not one for melee combat. He can fly, even turning into a lightning bolt for faster travel – but not combat, as he actually moves to fast to turn properly in that form – which also causes thunderclaps behind him. He can also mark surfaces with one of two runes: a rune that explodes into lighting when touched, or a rune that electrifies whatever surface it's on; the larger the surface, the weaker the shock.

Equipment: A bluish lightning-bolt shaped dagger for when things get up close and personal. It's magically attuned to Volt, so he can summon it back to his hand.

Vehicles/Mounts: None

Personality: Volt can act immature at times, pranking people and annoying them primarily for his own amusement at their exasperation. Despite this, he honestly tries to make friends, as he doesn't like being alone. Though he will follow anyone who proves themselves to be a friend, he will still question orders he doesn't agree with.

Bio: Born of magic, created in a storm by a battle between two other elementals, Volt has wandered the world for most of his life. The recent boon of technology, however, has stirred him to action. He keeps crashing into tall buildings, and his touch damages electrical systems, which, combined with his enjoyment of being around others has caused the technology faction to view him as a nuisance. In retaliation, Volt decided to help the mages.

Magic Vs Technology Empty Re: Magic Vs Technology

Post by Simply David Sat 23 Aug 2014, 8:57 pm

Name: Jace Beleren

Age: 21

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Appearance: His clothes change when he has to meet important people from any given political party. He wears special robes that hide his whole body save his head, usually purple or black in color.
http://bishibooru.com/_images/846cdad52968122ea69363204456a8db/73112%20-%20belt%20blond_hair%20chains%20glasses%20jacket%20original%20purple_hair%20solo.jpg

Magic-vs-Tech: Magic

Magic abilities/ESP: Jace was born with an abnormal amount of mana, making him particularly fantastic at calling the powers of the elements. His ability to use magic is above normal and he's quite proud of his abilities. He can manipulate the elements around him, summon beings of power, create forcefields, and perform other 'general' magic. His skill in magic is only matched by the frailty of his body, as he has to use magic to even be able to walk.

Equipment: A staff embedded with a crystal granting him enhanced control over his mana. While it isn't necessary, and he never uses it in battle, he will carry it around when trying to 'look' like a wizard.

Vehicles/Mounts: N/A

Personality: Jace is cocky, but well mannered. He can't believe he can mess anything up, partially because he knows his own limits and never takes on things far above his skill level. He does, however, consider his skill level to be quite high. He won't start fights directly but occasionally he accidentally eggs people on too far, and when this happens he doesn't hesitate to fight back. When he considers someone his enemy, he will never hold back against them. If he considers someone his friend, he will defend them with his life. One of his main problems when interacting with others is he's too used to acting, since he's always had to act around those who are 'above' him. Sometimes this leaks into his normal social life, and he's accidentally driven people away because of this. He acts like he doesn't care, never showing his true feelings about any given situation.

Bio: From birth, a lot of responsibility was placed on him by his parents. They had no hope of being a part of any noble circles until he was born, and it was all because he had ridiculous magical potential. Because of this, his parents taught him that his job in life was to provide them with a spot among the nobles. He's succeeded in this, of course, as his abilities with people were proven to be quite good as well. He's able to talk himself around in circles, making his 'debate opponent' completely forget what they were trying to catch him with. His skills in politics brought him and his parents far into the world of magic's upper echelons.

Jace himself isn't too worried about what this means. As far as he's concerned, he's done. His goals in life have been accomplished, his parents given what they wanted. What was left? Continuing with what he started, fighting a war he didn't really care much about from the start.

Magic Vs Technology Empty Re: Magic Vs Technology

Post by Simply David Sat 23 Aug 2014, 9:53 pm

Name: Karden

Age: ???

Gender: Male

Race: Demon

Appearance:
Spoiler:
He will occasionally change into a full on tuxedo suit if he can get one, as he is quite fashionable. When not dressed in such a manner, he wears casual men's clothes that accentuate his body without being outright problematic.

Magic-vs-Tech: Magic

Magic abilities/ESP: As a demon he can drink blood to increase his power, has strength and speed beyond normal humans, and can float through the air. He can summon small demons to do his bidding, and his own specific power is the ability to manipulate shadows to his whims.

Equipment: N/A

Vehicles/Mounts: He can summon a spectral dragon's skeleton to ride and fight upon, but he rarely does.

Personality: In a word: Loud. He just has a powerful voice when he speaks, and he's pretty cocky about himself. He dresses well and his personality suits his looks. He can be pretty quick to lose his cool however, and start shouting obscenities about whatever it is that has him angry. When he isn't angry and flipping out at people, he simply comes off as someone who sees himself above others. When it comes down to it, however, he actually has some secrets of his own that you'd have to really dig out of him. (Or read his mind)

Bio: His past before being summoned is unknown, though his ranking among demons is at least known: He's among the top of the middle rung, putting him above most demons but below the truly terrifying ones.

(Circumstances of his summoning TO BE DECIDED)

Magic Vs Technology Empty Re: Magic Vs Technology

Post by ScorpionWins Sat 23 Aug 2014, 10:29 pm

Name: Kaede Mashika

Age: 22

Gender: Female

Race: Human

Appearance:
"Hey, what are you staring at?!":

Magic-vs-Tech: Magic

Magic abilities/ESP: Kaede was trained in the art of using Ki, a special kind of magic that involves strengthening one's body and mind. She's a master martial artist, and possesses inhuman strength, durability, and agility. She can also shoot small energy blasts out of her hands, or cloak her limbs in energy for an exploding punch.

Equipment: None

Vehicles/Mounts: None

Personality: Fiery and passionate, Kaede puts her heart into everything she does. She can be a bit clumsy at times, but always means well. She hates those who pick on others, and will protect the weak at all costs. She's kind and forgiving to those who seek to atone, however, and isn't easily bothered or annoyed. Because of this, she can seem shameless, not caring if people see her naked or whatnot, but in reality she simply doesn't mind.

Bio: She was born to farmers and trained by local monks because of her strong ki. Kaede at first thought that the new technologies discovered by man were a good thing, helping her parents plant and harvest more crops every year. But the monks got into a dispute with the leading businesses, refusing to use any advanced technology in their monastery. As the monks were seen as a source of advice for the community, other people followed suit and business suffered. So the monastery was repossessed and turned into an office building. Against her old master's protests, she joined the Mages in the fight.

Magic Vs Technology Empty Re: Magic Vs Technology

Post by GenericSpider Thu 28 Aug 2014, 6:54 pm

Name: Marcy Henderson

Age: 25

Gender: female

Race: human

Appearance: (will find pic)

Magic-vs-Tech: Magic

Magic abilities: She's covered in magical tattoos  that lets her summon or turn into a variety of animals. She can also attach her tattoos to other people to apply her magic to them. All of her transformation spells wear off after a while.

Equipment: Prefers to travel light, and usually only carries equipment relevant to her trade as a historian.

Vehicles/Mounts: Sometimes rides her animal summons.

Personality: Worships the written word; and has a gigantic collection of books. Enjoys her job as a historian very much; even the boring parts. Is also very talkative; and will talk the ear off of anyone unfortunate enough to ask how her day went. However, anyone who damages a book, or a historical site, or an artifact in front of her will likely find themselves turned into something nasty.

Magic Vs Technology Empty Re: Magic Vs Technology

Post by Tom Tue 02 Sep 2014, 7:45 pm

Name: Captain McMann

Age: 22

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Appearance: Magic Vs Technology Bb649f10

Magic-vs-Tech: Tech

Magic abilities/ESP: None

Equipment: Assault rifle, pistol, various explosives, knife. A walking armoury, his gear depends on the situation he is expecting.

Vehicles/Mounts: Can drive anything fairly well with a bit of adaption.

Personality: Very brave and tough as nails. Always in battle mode which makes it hard for him to form personal relationships. Definitely a man of action, McMann is rather lost without a fight but remains cool headed under fire, is quick thinking and leads by example if not with flowery speeches. Tries to live his life one step at a time. Is often puzzled by techies and quirky people. Does not struggle to do what needs to me done or make tough decisions. He has a dry sense of humour and faces adversity with a small joke or two.

Bio: McMann's parents were an alcoholic, ex-soldier father who was prone to violence against his son and his mother who liked to keep herself sedated with prescription drugs. McMann escaped as soon as he turned sixteen and joined the army, where he joined a special forces task force. He soon rose through the ranks due to his daring nature and general skills and became a captain. Never referred to by his first name, it is a running joke that his first name is Captain.
